Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Purpose: |
To correct drooping eyelids or puffy
bags below the eyes. |
How it’s done: |
Excess fat, skin and muscle are removed
through small incisions hidden within the
folds of the eyelids. |
Recovery: |
Patients usually return to work within
10 days. However, it may take several weeks
for all the bruising and swelling to
disappear. |
Staying power: |
The results last for several years and
may even be permanent. |
Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)
Purpose: |
To reshape the nose so that it
harmonizes with other facial features. |
How it’s done: |
The procedure is customized to bring
about the desired outcome. This may mean
changing the size of the nose, removing a
hump, changing the shape of the tip or
bridge, narrowing the span of the nostrils
or changing the angle between the nose and
the upper lip. |
Recovery: |
Within two weeks, most patients are back
to work. However, the final result of nose
surgery may not become fully apparent for
one year or more. |
Staying power: |
Permanent |
Breast Enlargement (Augmentation Mammaplasty)
Purpose: |
To enhance the size and shape of the
breasts |
How it’s done: |
Implants are positioned behind the
breasts or chest muscle and inflated with
saline solution. |
Recovery: |
Women may often return to work within a
few days but need to avoid physical contact
with the breasts for about a month. The
scars may take several months to a year to
fade. |
Staying power: |
This will vary. Implants may require
removal or replacement. |

Breast Reconstruction (following breast
removal)
Purpose: |
To create a natural-looking breast to
replace one that has been removed because of
breast cancer. |
How it’s done: |
A number of methods may be used to
rebuild the breast. Commonly, the chest
muscle is stretched and an implant is
inserted beneath the chest muscle. Or, a
breast may be formed using skin, fat and
muscle from other parts of the body, such as
the back, abdomen or buttocks. The nipple
and areola are reconstructed in a later
procedure. |
Recovery: |
For most women, recovery may take six
weeks. It may take up to two years for scars
to fade. |
Staying power: |
Permanent. However, the breast’s shape
may change with aging and weight
fluctuation. |
Facelift (Rhytidectomy)
Purpose: |
To rejuvenate the appearance of the face
by tightening the skin (and, sometimes, the
muscles) of the face, chin and neck. |
How it’s done: |
Working through incisions mostly hidden
behind the hairline, excess facial fat and
skin are removed and muscles are tightened. |
Recovery: |
Patients typically return to work within
two weeks. Most of the bruising and swelling
subsides after 2-3 weeks. |
Staying power: |
Facelifts may last up to 10 years. |
Liposuction
Purpose: |
To improve the contour of the body,
face, neck, arms and/or legs. |
How it’s done: |
Exercise-resistant pockets of fat are
suctioned from the body with a tube and
vacuum device. |
Recovery: |
Most people are back to work within two
weeks but they need to avoid strenuous
activity for about a month. The final result
may not be visible until several months have
passed and the swelling subsides. |
Staying power: |
Permanent, with sensible diet and
exercise. |
Tummy-tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Purpose: |
To remove excess fat and skin and, in
some cases, restore weakened or separated
muscles. |
How it’s done: |
Working through an incision in the area
between the pubic hairline and the navel,
weakened abdominal muscles are repaired and
excess fat, tissue and skin is removed.
Liposuction can be combined with a
tummy-tuck. |
Recovery: |
Most people are ready to return to work
and normal activity in a few weeks, so long
as they do not engage in any heavy lifting
or vigorous exercise. |
Staying power: |
Permanent although the positive outcome
can be greatly diminished by significant
fluctuations in weight. |
